Moscow
Roots & Shoots Mural
April 19 & 26 2007 at Lena Whitmore
Elementary School

Mural by Moscow's Roots & Shoots
group led by Amy Newsome and artist
Lizette Fife. Money for the
project was sponsored by a grant
from the Idaho
Commission on the Arts.

The tiles for
the mural were laid out and students
selected the native plants and
animals that they wanted to paint.
Some students chose to paint the
foreground, some the mid-ground, and
some the background and sky area.

Participants
sketched their design and different
suggestions were given before they
drew on their tiles. To save
time, the drawings were traced onto
the tiles using graphite paper
before the tiles were painted.

Room 16 at
Lena Whitmore Elementary school was
used after school was over.
Students were scattered around the
room at different stations.

Before the
second tile painting session, the
tiles were laid out. We
discussed how we needed to tie the
tiles together graphically to make a
mural.
After group discussion and tile rearrangement, it was
decided that we should add an
additional row of tiles at the top
so that our duck pond would not be
in the sky.
This change meant that I had to cut more tiles later
for the side borders and the cost
increased slightly due to adding the
extra tiles.

Several
students painted on the background
of the tiles to make them read as a
mural.

The finished
mural is ready to be framed and will
be on display at Gail Buyer's Real
Estate office in downtown Moscow for
Artwalk.
